Fit Friday - 7 Ideas for Good Self Care

This Fit Friday post is by Kelly Shores of Restoration Counseling (based right here in Fortville). She is one of the licensed counselors at Restoration Counseling and has great tips for mamas on taking care of yourself. You may remember another post Kelly did for us, Mama Guilt. A fabulous informative post as well. If you missed our first post in this new series you can read it here.

To kick us off here are a few of my favorite self care go-to items. My Lucky Ducky Designs Journal, Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts, a little Pope Francis Mercy and a my favorite coffee cup given to me by a certain little boy when he was two. I definitely don't go to them often enough. I think we all need a gentle nudge to quit being so busy and take a moment for our mama self.

Taking time for self care is so very important!

In last week's Fit Friday post Toby of Blue Seas Fitness and Wellness Center talked about the importance of making yourself a priority and setting healthy goals for yourself. Today, I want to build on that thought by talking about the importance of well rounded self care. While taking care of ourselves physically is a huge part of self care, it is also important to be taking care of ourselves mentally and spiritually as well.

We live in a society that keeps us jam-packed. Running from one thing to another with very little downtime. In addition, many of us feel guilty when we take time out for ourselves, as if we should be doing something else "more important." I find this to be especially true for moms!

When we stop and take time out for ourselves we give ourselves a gift. We are able to rejuvenate, to think more clearly, to feel refreshed and invigorated. However, we also give a gift to those when are responsible to and for. We have more energy for our responsibilities, we take more joy in our daily life, and more resources to give to those we love.

Self care is an important and often overlooked piece of good mental (and physical) health. Find some ways to add self care to your schedule...not sure where to start?

Here Are 7 Great Self Care Ideas:
  • Go out for lunch or coffee with a friend or by yourself
  • Go to the gym or start a regular workout routine
  • Pick up a book you have been wanting to read
  • Find a hobby
  • Go for a walk and enjoy the warmer weather
  • Snuggle up with a warm blanket and a cup of tea on a rainy day
  • Spend time writing in your journal
Hopefully, this gives you some ideas of where to start on your self care journey. If you are still struggling with ways to get started on the self care journey give us a call. Setting aside time for counseling is also a great way to care for yourself as well.
