Hancock County Treasures - Top 7 Reasons To Come To The Fortville Library

With this week being Dr. Seuss' birthday, it's the perfect time to talk about an awesome local FREE resource - our library! We sat down with the very cool Mrs. Brenda Ratliff, Fortville Library Librarian, and discussed what's new and what's upcoming at the library, including this year's summer program. We also inquired about what her top 7 favorite reasons to visit the library. Drum roll, please... Enjoy an awesome guest post from the one and only Mrs. Brenda Ratliff!

Top 7 Reasons to Come to the Library!

First of all, it is a great place to come as a family. Everyone from the youngest child to the most experienced adult reader can find something that will be of interest. For example, there are learning toys, games to play, and board books to share with the preschoolers. There are books for beginning, emerging and fluent readers of all ages. Perhaps your family would enjoy choosing a movie to watch together, or maybe you would like to introduce the family to different music genres on CDs. We are the best place to do all of this, and it is FREE!

Second, it is a great place to come for story time. We have a wonderful story time 5 times a week. It is for the children from 2-5. They can come each week with a parent, grandparent, or babysitter and learn about different topics. They can participate in American Sign Language, songs, finger plays, interact with stories, make an age-appropriated craft, color and often enjoy a snack. What a wonderful way to introduce young children to the world of books, where they have fun and are not be asked to be quiet! Plus this week is all about Dr. Seuss! Sign-up in the library and reserve your spot today.

Third, it is a great place to find books of all formats and genres. We have books in print, books on CD, and electronic books that can be downloaded. Everyone can find something to suit their needs and wants. We have nonfiction books which can help you grow in knowledge or fiction books to stimulate your imagination, bring some much needed humor, or just entertain your mind.

Fourth, it is a great place to come and watch a movie for free with your family! About once a month, we have a newly released DVD movie planned, usually on a Friday evening. There will be popcorn and a drink to enjoy. You and your family can have an entertaining evening all for FREE. In March, our free movie will be on the 20th. A perfect family night out.

Fifth, it is a great place to come and read a daily newspaper or enjoy a magazine in the warm sunshine of the front windows of the library. You can learn about what is going on around the world or what is current in the latest issue of your favorite magazine while sitting in a comfortable chair and getting your vitamin D from the sun!

Sixth, it is a great place to use the computers we have, or use your own device that uses wifi. You can work on projects with others, kids can get homework help online, you can check your email or use your social media. Our copiers and scanners can be used for projects as well.

Seventh, it is a great place to get help from any of the library staff. We would love to help with questions about finding information, great books, local history, businesses or services in our local community, genealogy, etc. If we donʼt have the answers, we will help you find out how to get them. We love our patrons and want you to enjoy what your tax dollars have paid for. We are here to serve you!

As you can see, there are great things happening at your library. Itʼs up to you to come in and enjoy what we have to offer. We have many other things coming up this summer that you and your family can enjoy. Each summer we have a summer reading program where we encourage everyone, from infants to adults, to read and and be a part of the fun. There will be special crafts or all ages, outside programs that we bring in, prizes, movies and a special party at the end to celebrate everyoneʼs participation and/or completion. This summerʼs theme is “Every Hero Has a Story.” We will be planning many special things. Please watch for more information on our website, in the newspaper, through electronic newsletters from the schools and most likely from just talking with others in the community.
